Luminescence chronology of fossiliferous fluvial sediments along the middle Atbara River, Sudan

چکیده

Fluvial sediments of the middle Atbara River Valley, eastern Sudan, contain abundant vertebrate fossils and stone tools. Previous work described two sedimentary units, Butana Bridge Synthem (BBS) Khashm El Girba (KGS), with three divisions each (BBS1-3 KGS1-3, from bottom to top, respectively). 230Th/U dating on bivalve shells suggested an age ∼126 ∼92 ka for basal KGS2 KGS3, respectively, mammalian biochronology in combination magnetostratigraphy late Early early Middle Pleistocene underlying BBS. To establish a detailed chronology this fluvial sequence, we collected 17 luminescence samples both sides close Bridge. Quartz OSL was applied upper part profile (upper KGS3), but signal reached saturation within ∼10 m sequence. select suitable feldspar date older beyond limit quartz OSL, comparison post-IR IRSL at 225 290 °C, pulsed 50 °C conducted sample KGS3. The result showed that only fading corrected yielded consistent signals (both °C) overestimated significantly. We therefore selected deposits. ages indicate entire BBS - KGS sequence deposited between 224 ± 23 <17 1 ka, corresponding marine isotope stages (MIS) 7–2, significantly revising previous conclusions.

Luminescence chronology of cave sediments at the Atapuerca paleoanthropological site, Spain.

Ascertaining the timing of the peopling of Europe, after the first out-of-Africa demographic expansion at the end of the Pliocene, is of great interest to paleoanthropologists. One of the earliest direct evidences for fossil hominins in western Europe comes from an infilled karstic cave site called Gran Dolina at Atapuerca, in a stratum approximately 1.5m below the Brunhes-Matuyama (B-M) geomag...

Assessing Heavy Metals Pollution of the Mangrove Sediments along Tidal Flat of the Mehran River Delta, Persian Gulf

The relationship between the concentration of heavy metals and physicochemical factors was studied in the fine-grained sediments of the tidal section of the Mehran delta where mangrove trees have grown. Surface sediments of the tidal zone of the Mehran delta were sampled. The grain size distribution, calcium carbonate, organic matter contents, pH/Eh, and heavy metals concentration were determin...

Erosion of biofilm-bound fluvial sediments

The movement of fluvial sediment shapes our rivers. Understanding sediment entrainment has been a goal of hydraulic engineers for almost a century1,2. Previous sediment entrainment models have been informed by laboratory experiments using grains that were free from biological material3. In natural river settings, however, sediments are invariably covered by bacteria, often forming visible biofi...

neoichnology of rare biogenic structure koilosoma (hitchcock 1858) in fluvial sediments of the abhar-rud river, zanjan province, nw iran

two polygonal biogenic sedimentary rare structures of koilosoma (hitchcock 1858) have been found due to neoichnology of the abhar-rud river fluvial sediments, northwest iran. one of them is polygon holes, with about one square meter area. polygons are same in size and depth, and are hexagonal in shape. they have distinct boundaries like the honeycomb. this sample is like the reported specimens ...

Rock-a-bye bone marrow Chemotherapy saves the lives of many cancer patients. However, it is a difficult treatment that induces many major side effects, with one of the most common being myelosuppression—depletion of bone marrow cells. The consequences of myelosuppression include anemia, thrombocytopenia, and neutropenia, all of which can cause severe complications and delay subsequent courses o...
